Message its a STINKING JOB! most of the ones i've done have been with the engine out, but i have done 2 with the engine in. that was the biggest PITA, but it can be done. most of it is pretty stright forward, start by removing the plenum, and battery. discharge a/c, then disconnect lines at expansion valve. go inside the car and remove the glove box, glove box frame, and the evaporator case. peel the p/s carpet back and remove the ecu and disconnect the 2 connectors inside. remove the metal shield protecting the harness, then pull the harness through the firewall. remove nose panel and disconnect mafs. remove 1 10mm bolt holding l/h i/c piping to body and pull the mafs connector through. disconnect 2 connectors by fuse block (3 if a/t), remove one bolt holding harness to fuse block. remove ground under intake pipe on left side. disconnect ptu, ect, t/s, and cas on front of engine, then pull harness up inbetween intake pipe and inner fender on left side. disconnect tps, wga, egr on left side. disconect o2, vtc, wga, and egr on right side. disconnect injectors, coils, fts, air reg, iscv, o2, knock sensor and vtc on rear of engine. now the "fun" part. there are a total of 11 10mm nuts on the firewall that you'll need to remove that hold brackets inplace to protect the harness. you can get most of them with a medium length socket and a 1/4" rachet. there are 2 shields on the left side by the brake booster that are the main problem. you can remove the brake master clyinder/booster assy to make getting at them easier but it isnt nec. i use a 10" 1/4" drive ext. and a 10mm sievel socket to get the nuts. it takes some inventive contorting of your hands and "expert" misuse of your tools, but it can be done. also if you attempt this with the engine in make SURE that you reinstall the 2 shields on the left side in the correct position, and route the coil harness properly, or else the new harness will contact the exhaust and cause you big problems. i would suggest paying very close attention to how the harness is routed before you remove it. take notes and pix if you have too, believe me...take the extra time to do it, the end result is worth it. hope this is helpful and good luck!
